My blog has become a favorite target of Indian outsourcing companies.
I have received quite a few sale pitches like the one below from these “we can do it all companies” from the list of technologies, you would think that this company must be larger than Microsoft, yet when you check their portfolio, you see a couple small business websites, so where is the disconnect. I suppose it is the good old “I have a guy” type of referral program we all know when you have a contractor show up at your house to give you a quote on building a new fence. “Oh I have a guy that could also paint your house, replace your windows, build your extension, do your landscaping, upgrade your kitchen…” and the list keeps going. I have did make it up. This is really a “copy and paste from the services offer” that I received. I hope since it’s so long I will not be accused for keyword staffing.

Some time ago Google came up with a selection of its services made custom for iphone. The first impression was great. Google search works great and so does gmail and Google calendar. However the main feature that I wanted to use this service was the Google reader. I love the article syndication that Google reader offers and use it daily on my desktop. What Google attempted to do with its reader for mobile devices was to translate the real pages into HTML for mobile devices. Great idea at first glance but the reality is different. Iphone makes in fact did a great job optimizing the iphone safari browser to read well real web pages, and I absolutely love the double tap zoom functionality that determines the width of an element and precisely zooms on the content that you are about to read. Then if you flip your iphone horizontally, you get a very readable widow that no other phone has offered before. This to me is revolutionary who spends a couple hours a day commuting and loves to keep up on news and blogs. Well this functionality was all lost in Google’s fancy Google reader for iphone. Not only are is the text so small that you need a perfect vision to read it, but if for some reason there was an image on the page that is wider than your current screen, you have to scroll left and right on each line. At this I become so annoyed with this service that I just simply turn it off and try to go to the page directly. So Google developers please do me a favor and do something about it. This is really a embarrassing that your Google reader page for iphone is the hardest to read page I ever accessed on my iphone.

I just got from Barn’s and Nobles’ book store where a new book “SEO: Search Engine Optimization Bible” written by Jerri L. Ledford caught my eye on the book shelve. Since this topic is quite new and the true knowledge is often not shared by the real experts, I thought this might me an interesting book to look at. Well apart from the catchy title, I must say this book is a disaster. Not that the author (Jerri L. Ledford) has obviously no clue about SEO and I doubt she ever optimized a page. There are some serious errors that make me wonder how they ever could get through the editors. I suppose the only think that make this book popular is the fact that there has in fact not that many published material on the market. Jerri L. Ledford is in deed an accomplished writer with many years many published titles, however it is obvious that the text of this book is written by somehow who merely researched the topic and compiled articles with sporadic editorial quality. I was so outraged when reading the text that I almost bought the book so that I could just quote some of the statements in this blog post. Anyway, please save yourself $40 and stay away from Jerri L. Ledford’s SEO Bible!

oznamkujucitele.cz is a “web 2.0” website that I created about four months ago to explore the possibilities of the Czech internet market. Really a “test the waters” project actually turned out to be very successful now having nearly 1500 professors and also decent daily traffic. One of my friends pointed out some time ago that it will be important to make to site playful and with that in mind, and interesting idea came to me: since I have a cumulated a good number of user submitted profile photos of professors, why not to create a Hot or Not style rating. A few days later this page was up and all feedback was positive so far.

A couple of days a go one of my friends pointed out to me new homepage of BBC. My first impression was wowow… this looks like a social networking site, what a paradigm shift. Next as I am looking under the hood, my astonishment continues: BBC is using jquery as a JavaScript framework. This is huge I thought to myself. If a site like this that by the way has to answer to very strict web accessibility laws in England starts using jquery library that some developers have been mocking for it’s simplicity, there must be something to it. I can just see that every publisher in the world will want this as the buzz spreads. This is indeed a good news for me as the jquery expert who has a head start before the masses of developers who will be jumping on the jquery fan band wagon.
